As we head towards the home stretch of the Winter Sports Season, it is a perfect time to vote for our January “Laker Athlete of the Month”. Please vote from the following nominees who have lead their teams both on and off the field of play:
Nate Neeley – Boys Swimming
Nate has 6 first place finishes during the month of January, leading to his overall record of 14- 1. He took 1st in the 50 free and 100 free at the West Bloomfield Invitational. Currently he is ranked 16th in the 50 free and 32nd in the 100 free in Michigan with an overall rank of 26th. His national rank for the class of 2018 is 881st.
Austin Bashi – Wrestling
Austin recorded a 22-2 record during the month of January. His overall record is 35-3. He won the West Bloomfield Invitational and the Tyler Richards Invitational. He is currently the # 8 ranked wrestler in the state at 103 lbs.
Calum Schulz – Boys Skiing
As boys captain, Calum has led the team with two 1st place finishes, a 2nd and 3rd, in slalom. In giant slalom he has had three 1st’s and three 2nd’s leading the team to a 4 win / 5 loss season record. Overall amounst 70+ racers, Calum has finished consistantly in the top 15 with a 8th place best in SL and 4th place best in GS.
Anne Arthurs – Girls Skiing
Anne, a sophomore, came into her own this year with one 1st, four 2nds, three 3rd’s in slalom. In giant slalom Anne racked up five 1st’s and a 2nd. Together with sister Lindsay, they took the team to the best season record in a long time 6 win / 3 loss. Overall amounst 70+ racers, Anne finishes in the top 10 with a best of 9th in SL and 3rd in GS.
John-Paul Ayar – Boys Hockey
In the month of January JP has taken on a leadership role for ice hockey. Tallying up 11 points in 9 games. He has been a vital role on the special teams play. Also, continuing to work at his face off percentage, JP is running over 80% this season. All while being a sophomore.
Asher Bingley – Boys Snowboarding
Asher has raced in several positions including #1 this season. He is tied for the most wins and earned his at #2 a much more difficult slot. He is one of the hardest workers on the team and is finishing up his third season on varsity.
Gabby Lambert – Girls Snowboarding
Gabby has raced in several positions including #1 this season. She is currently #2 in total points earned for the season despite missing contests due to injury. She is a three time captain, two time state meet qualifier and was the driving force behind the formation of West Bloomfield Snowboarding.
Haley Petz – Figure Skating
Haley has been a great addition to the WBHS varsity figure skating team this season. She has helped lead our A team to second place finishes in both our December and January competitions, which places our team 2nd in our district among 7 teams. Haley’s professional attitude and expertise in the sport have greatly helped encourage her fellow teammates at practices and competitions. She attends practice with a smile on her face and a determination to do the best she can despite all odds. She even competed at our last competition while recovering from an injury. Our A team now stands in second place with 21 total points
Demi Vance – Cheer
Demi has consistently thrived in all 3 Rounds for us every year that she’s been on the Varsity team. She is a huge asset to our program with the leadership she constantly displays. She remains a positive leader to others in our program.
Jada Grandy – Girls Basketball
Jada is averaging 6 points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds a game. She recorded a season high 15 points against Oxford. Jada’s hard work on and off the court earned her recognition as a team captain.
Donavan Moore– Boys Basketball
Donavan has averaged 24.5 points per game in his first 5 games as a Laker. He also scored the go ahead basket in a victory over Belleville High school. Donavan scored a career high 40 points against Troy High School.
