Lakers News · Fall Sports Update

Hello Laker Nation-

As we head into the beginning of the Fall Sports Season,  I wanted to send a message to update everyone with information regarding tryouts and first practices for the Fall Sports season.  We also wanted to provide an update regarding protocols that will be in place to keep our student-athletes, coaches, and their families safe.  As everyone understands, schedules and plans will be changing with adjustments that are made in MHSAA/NFHS and state recommendations, so we ask for flexibility as we navigate through these uncertain times.

The Fall Sports season officially begins on August 10th (Football) or August 12th (official first day for all other fall sports).  Practices and tryouts will be in accordance with all MHSAA guidelines, as the MHSAA has developed a staggered approach to reinstating sports.  We are currently in a Modified Step 2 Protocol as defined by MHSAA/NFHS Guidelines.  This protocol provides restrictions as to what activities can be performed in practice as well as regulations as to how student-athletes, coaches, etc should be admitted to practice/tryouts daily.  Please refer to the attachment Modified Step 2 Protocol – West Bloomfield High School and educate yourself and your student-athlete on the procedures for check-in as well as the protocols that must be followed during their time in practice.  Remember, these guidelines are in place to provide the safest environment for all involved.  Specific sport return to play guidelines can be found on the MHSAA website by clicking on the specific sport of interest.  Any questions regarding these guidelines can be directed to the head coach of the program or the district athletic director.

The current Fall 2020 tryout schedule is also attached.  As you can see, our indoor sports of volleyball and girls swimming currently are not allowed to practice indoors through the MHSAA/NFHS protocol.  Arrangements are being made for outdoor tryouts/practices in the event that the MHSAA doesn’t update the policy by this Friday.  Please refer to the athletic website for updates regarding tryouts/first practices for these sports.

In order to participate in tryouts/practices for an athletic team, the following needs to be completed:

  1.  Athlete On-Line Registration-
  2.  Athletic Physical on File-
  3.  MHSAA Health Questionnaire- If a physical is on file with the school and dated after April 15th 2019, a student-athlete may complete the MHSAA Health Questionnaire in lieu of a new physical to meet the requirement for participation.

Thank you for your understanding and flexibility during this time.  We look forward to providing a safe, fun, and beneficial experience for all of our student-athletes.

Go Lakers!!!
